A tale from the past of kings Own Border;

Location: Ballykinler
Date/Time: Pre-Christmas 1972
Event: Stealing of Regimental Christmas Cakes

This horrendous crime was carried out during the Bns residential tour in Ulster.
As a result of this crime the normal suspects from A,B,C,Sp,Admin and Command companys(thats going back).

The offence was carried out by person or persons who felt that after a few pints of warm and cloudy in the John Peel Pub (plastic that is as was opened by that brassy bird from Corrie) they needed some thing to eat and would go to the regimental restaurant, the problem with that idea was that it was closed!! No problem they gained entry and had a look round, nothing was found that was edible but low and behold they came across the 'Regimental Christmas Cakes' that the chefs had spent many an hour making. As they were all that they could find it was decided they would suffice as a late supper and they were lifted.

The next morning the early turn chef opened the regimental restaurant ready for early breakfasts discovered that the christmas cakes had gone.!!

Regimental outrage, who would do such a thing, who wouls stoop so low as to steal the cakes at this time of year!!

RSM(Monty) and the Provost Sgt(Black Mac) and thier lackeys rounded up all the normal suspects from A,B,C,Sp,Admin and Command companys, no one was talking. They even tried to follow a trail of cake crumbs(shades of combat tracking9no not Combat Scott) but nothing was found. So who 'Stolethe cakes'? People pointed the finger at various groups and platoons but the truth never came out!! So the great regimental mystery went unsolved and as far as I am aware still is unsolved, who knows the answer!!! (excuse me while I brush these crumbs off me shirt).

Can you help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As I said in the PM we did not have time to go and sit in the plastic pub seeing as we were always out on the ground. I dont know what made me think about that incident (must be me age) but it got me thinking about all of the other daft things that we got up to in those long gone days.

I will always remember the time that Spartacus set fire to Colin A's sleeping bag whilst trying liven up the fire using petrol. He throw the petrol on and as it hit the peat embers the stream of petrol ignited and shot up his arm. He throw the can away as it was now alight and it landed on Colin A's sleeping bag. No one could do any thing as we were all curled up on the floor laughing. Poor old CJ spent a cold night as Colin A trook his bag.

I also think about the way that we checked bridges and culverts back then, simply drive up to it and have a look, nothing sophisticated in them days. There were a lot of bridges and culverts in Derrylin.

Then there was the time again at Lisnaski when standby commander on being crashed out to an incident found that my team could not get in the back of the APC due to the fact that it was full of Lino floor tiles that a certain bald headed member of 11 pl had obtained in order to exchange it for some Poteen from one of the locals. The good old days.

I thought you were with Recce at that time, Tom? I guess my time frames are a little confused. Oops

Tony

I started the tour in Ballykinler in Recce, after completing the Sect commanders cadre with you I was promoted and posted to 'C' Company and sent to 11 pl. At that time there were a great number of charactersm in the pl. People like Barry Sutc, Tommy Gard, John Woodh (now ex major QLR) Des (I have bad knees) Greires, CJ, Des T and many more. Good old Jock Eddy was acting pl sgt (him what had the barbers strop).

We had some good times apart from the fact that some of the things we did were right out of the back pocket but we got away with it. Colin As was pl commander who handed over to Frankie ( I have just had words with the brigade commander and he said!!) Boy. As I said good old days.

Winkte

Are you casting nasturtiums on the characters of these fine upstanding members of the Recce Pl!!! On my part the silence is deafening and I have a very good legal team. This incident is one of the many that always happened within the bn, it was these little dittes that made life more then a little less boring. What about the time during the UN tour when two members of the Bn obtained 'two fighting cocks' and kept them in a wire compound, I wonder who they were!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Good old days.
